OBX Photo Tour
Once a remote area, Outer Banks has grown into a popular summer resort and is famous for its natural beauty, laid-back lifestyle and cultural diversity. It is the site of the first flight and Blackbeards favorite haunt, and it is considered to be the birthplace of America and the site of the first English settlement in the New World.

Our beautiful barrier islands are rich in history and offer many attractions: the historic Whalehead Club, 5 distinct lighthouses, the Wright Brothers Memorial, Americas oldest outdoor drama "The Lost Colony", the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the Roanoke Island Festival Park, one of the three North Carolina Aquariums and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico, Croatan and Albemarle Sounds, our area boasts unparalleled natural beauty and is home to Jockeys Ridge - the largest sand dune on the East Coast, Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and 4 national wildlife refuges (Alligator River, Pea Island, Currituck, and Mackay Island).

Outer Banks is a relatively small area but home to many communities with their own very distinct features and their unique character and charm. This chapter of thinkOBX.com was designed as a general guide to the Outer Banks and I hope it will help You get familiar with OBX towns and communities.

It contains approximately 2/3 of the North Carolina coastline and includes the incorporated towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo, as well as the unincorporated communities of Colington, Roanoke and Hatteras Islands: Wanchese, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.

      Currituck County

One of the five original ports of North Carolina and one of the original colonies, Currituck County was
established around 1668 and has a total area of 443.63 square miles, with 261.4 square miles of land. With the abundant waters, marshes and woods, "The Land of the Wild Goose" (from the Algonquian Indian word "Currituck"), is home to 22,617 permanent residents and enjoys a reputation of a "Sportsmans Paradise", as it offers great recreation opportunities: golfing, swimming, kayaking, fishing and hunting. Currituck County contains 2 distinct areas: The Mainland and The Beach (with the latter covering over 20 miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean in the community of Corolla) and is divided into 7 townships: Moyock, Moyock-Gibbs Woods, Crawford, Poplar Branch-Outer Banks (beach), Poplar Branch-Mainland, Fruitville-Knotts Island, and Fruitville-Outer Banks (beach). Currituck Mainland is located within close proximity to both the Outer Banks beaches and major metropolitan areas of Virginia, making it a popular choice of primary residents and people relocating to the area.
