 Dare County
With the permanent population of 35,145 (July 2005), Dare Countycovers an area of 800 square miles, of which 391 square miles is land. It was formed in 1870 and is named in honor of Virginia Dare, the first child born of English parents in America. It contains approximately 2/3 of the North Carolina coastline and includes the incorporated towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo, as well as the unincorporated communities of Colington, Roanoke and Hatteras Islands: Wanchese, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. One of the five original ports of North Carolina and one of the original colonies, Currituck County was established around 1668 and has a total area of 443.63 square miles, with 261.4 square miles of land. With the abundant waters, marshes and woods, "The Land of the Wild Goose" (from the Algonquian Indian word "Currituck"), is home to 22,617 permanent residents and enjoys a reputation of a "Sportsman´s Paradise", as it offers great recreation opportunities: golfing, swimming, kayaking, fishing and hunting. Currituck County contains 2 distinct areas: The Mainland and The Beach (with the latter covering over 20 miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean in the community of Corolla) and is divided into 7 townships: Moyock, Moyock-Gibbs Woods, Crawford, Poplar Branch-Outer Banks (beach), Poplar Branch-Mainland, Fruitville-Knotts Island, and Fruitville-Outer Banks (beach). Currituck Mainland is located within close proximity to both the Outer Banks beaches and major metropolitan areas of Virginia, making it a popular choice of primary residents and people relocating to the area. |
